PUPPY MILL ALERT: (excerpt from the Bernese Mtn Dog club of Northern Illinois website).
There are currently individuals exploiting our beautiful breed by purchasing litters of Bernese puppies wholesale from Russian puppy mills and various former Soviet bloc countries. They pay several hundred dollars and resell them here for many times that price. Many of these puppies have serious health problems and some may not even be pure bred Bernese. Some of these puppies cannot be registered with the American Kennel Club.
We are committed to improving and protecting the Bernese Mountain Dog now and in the future. We are fighting to keep our dogs out of puppy mills and pet stores. Please do not buy a Berner from an ad in the newspaper or pet shop, or online without meeting the breeder. The advertisers are usually selling foreign or domestic puppy mill dogs or are “high volume” dog breeders.
Please, please be patient if you are interested in purchasing a Bernese puppy. You may have to wait four to six months for a puppy from a reputable breeder. However, you greatly increase your chances of getting a healthy, happy Berner by buying from an ethical breeder who adheres to a code of ethics, belongs to a local Berner club, and wants to build an ongoing relationship with you for the life of the dog.
Also the Southeastern Wisconsin Bernese Mtn. Dog club has a very informative brochure worth reading prior to searching for a dog (puppy or adult) foryour family. Here is the their link:
Puppy Costs - great link that is a “reality” check on what the average cost of dog ownership entails. It also differentiates back yard breeders from hobby breeders.
BMDCA ONLINE BREEDER REFERRAL - a great link for all puppy preparation
What to know when shopping for pups on the internet
All of our puppies are sold on an AKC Limited Registration
We do not sell our puppies to other breeders or to other countries (Canada excluded).
We do not maintain “lists” or send out questionnaires to potential puppy buyers until we confirm that one of our girls is pregnant. Since there are generally more buyers than puppies, we carefully screen for the best homes for our dogs. We encourage you to check back frequently and call or email us to drop by for a visit so you can meet us and our dogs!
